Moving Timeline: Planning Your Macon Move
You probably have one fixed date already: a lease that ends, a closing, or a first day at a new job. The schedule below counts back eight weeks from that date and forward through the first month in Macon. The week markers are a planning schedule, not a rule; compress them if you have less time. The deadlines inside them are not flexible, and each one is named with its source: the Postal Service’s lead time for forwarding mail, utilities that connect only on business days, Georgia’s 30-day clocks for a license and a car, and the dates that govern schools and homestead exemptions.
Eight Weeks Before
- Decide the type of move: within Georgia, or from another state. A move that starts and ends in Georgia is regulated by the Georgia Department of Public Safety, whose moving guide explains that short moves are priced by workers and hours and moves of more than 50 miles by weight and distance; an interstate move falls under federal rules.
- Ask movers for written estimates on the same inventory. Under the department’s estimate rule, a Georgia estimate is binding only when you and the mover agree to a binding estimate and its terms are stated on the department’s Uniform Estimated Cost of Services Form, so ask which kind you are getting.
- Read your lease for its notice requirement and move-out terms, or set the closing date with your agent.
- If children will enroll, request school records, immunization records and any IEP or 504 plan from the current school.
- If you are buying, note Georgia’s homestead dates now: you must own the home as of January 1, and the application is due by April 1, according to Georgia’s homestead exemption guide. The Department of Revenue’s homestead page adds that applicants “may apply up to the end of their 45-day window to appeal their notice of assessment”, so treat April 1 as the target and confirm any later date with the Macon-Bibb tax commissioner.
Six Weeks Before
- Book the mover in writing, with the date, the pricing method and the protection level.
- Start sorting each room into bring, sell or donate, and discard. Room-by-room steps are in the packing guide for a Macon move.
- Buy or reserve boxes and packing supplies, and begin packing rooms you rarely use.
Four Weeks Before
- Find out which utilities serve the new address and schedule them. Georgia Power says on its residential page that service “can be connected at your residence Monday through Friday, excluding business holidays”, so a weekend arrival needs a weekday connection date before it. The Macon Water Authority says “some new customers may be required to come into our business office to provide additional documentation”, according to its account page. If the home uses gas, choose a certified marketer; the steps are in setting up utilities in Macon.
- Schedule internet installation for the new address and set end dates for every service at the old one.
- Move renters or homeowners insurance to the new address effective on moving day.
- For school enrollment, note that the Bibb County School District accepts new student applications for the next school year as of April 1, according to its registration page.
Two Weeks Before
- File the mail forwarding request. The U.S. Postal Service says to “allow at least 7-10 business days” for a change of address to take effect once it is approved.
- Confirm the mover’s date, arrival window and crew size, and the payment due at delivery.
- Pack most rooms, leaving daily essentials.
- If the move falls between May and September, plan for heat: the airport station’s 1991 to 2020 climate normals average 18.2 days of 90°F or more in June, 24.7 in July and 22.0 in August.
The Final Week
- Pack the bag that travels with you: medicines, documents, chargers, clothes and bedding for the first night.
- Collect keys, remotes and access cards for the handover, and schedule the move-out walkthrough.
- Know the payment rule. For a non-binding Georgia estimate, the department’s rule requires the mover to deliver on payment of no more than 110% of the estimate and to defer the balance for 30 days; confirm the accepted payment method ahead of time.
Moving Day
Moving day has its own sequence, from paperwork to the first night, in the moving day checklist for Macon. Under the department’s rules, a Georgia mover may charge for waiting time when its crew is on site and unable to work for reasons that are not its fault, so be ready when the crew arrives.
The First Week in Macon
- Check the power, water, cooling and any gas appliances on the first day.
- Count the boxes against your list and write down any damage.
- Learn your trash day; Macon-Bibb’s household garbage rules require bagged garbage and set cart times.
- If you moved from another state, go to the Department of Driver Services early in this week.
The First 30 Days
If you moved from another state, two deadlines run, counted from different days. “You must apply for a Georgia driver’s license within 30 days of becoming a resident”, the state says on its guide to transferring a license. The car must be registered within 30 days from the date you moved to Georgia, according to the Department of Revenue’s page for new residents, and registration asks for the Georgia license, so get the license in the first week or two; late registration brings a 10 percent penalty on unpaid title tax after 30 days and interest of 1 percent per month after 60 days, according to the Department of Revenue’s policy bulletin.
If you moved from another Georgia county, the list is shorter: update the license address with the Department of Driver Services and notify the Macon-Bibb tax office within 30 days, as its motor vehicles page asks. The details for both groups are in the guide to DMV, registration and address changes.
When a Date Slips
- If a closing moves, call the mover the same day; a mover that arrives and cannot work may charge waiting time.
- If the utilities are not on at arrival, call the provider with your confirmation number and ask for the next weekday connection.
- If the mover is late, record the time and the cause, and refer to the delivery terms on your bill of lading.
Checking the Timeline
A finished timeline passes five checks. The mover’s date, pricing method and protection level are confirmed in writing. The change of address was filed at least 7 to 10 business days before you need it. Utilities are scheduled to connect on a weekday at or before arrival. School records are in hand if children will enroll. And for an out-of-state move, the license visit sits early enough that each car can be registered within 30 days of the moving date.
