Cost of Moving and Living in Macon
Prices in the Macon area sit below the national level by the federal government’s own measure. The Bureau of Economic Analysis sets the United States at 100 and compares each metro area against it; for the Macon-Bibb County metro area, the 2024 regional price parity, published through the St. Louis Fed, is 88.5 for all items, and the housing rents component is 58.9. Those two numbers describe the place, not your budget. A workable budget has two parts: the one-time cost of getting here and setting up, and the monthly cost of living here once you have.
A Budget Worksheet
This worksheet lists the items to price, in the order to price them, with where the number comes from. It leaves the dollar column blank on purpose: the right figures are the quotes and bills for your own move and address.
| Item | One-time or recurring | Where the number comes from |
|---|---|---|
| First month's rent and security deposit, or down payment and closing costs | One-time | The lease or the purchase contract |
| Rent or mortgage payment, insurance and any association dues | Monthly | The lease, loan estimate and insurance quote |
| Mover's charges, packing materials and protection level | One-time | Written estimates from licensed movers |
| Travel to Macon, temporary lodging and storage | One-time | Your route, hotel and storage quotes |
| Utility deposits and application fees, including any water deposit | One-time | Each utility serving the address |
| Electricity, water, gas and internet | Monthly | The providers serving the address |
| Title Ad Valorem Tax, title fee and tag fee for each car | One-time | 3% of each eligible vehicle's value for new residents, plus the state's title and registration fees |
| Car insurance, fuel and maintenance, or bus fares | Monthly | Your insurer; the transit fare table |
| Property tax and solid waste charges | Recurring | The county's millage rates and the tax commissioner's bill |
| Groceries, health care and child care | Monthly | Your current spending, adjusted after a first month here |
Housing comes first because it is both the largest one-time cash need and the largest monthly cost, and it decides several other lines, including which utilities serve the address and which school zone applies.
What the Price Index Can and Cannot Tell You
A regional price parity compares average price levels, so it is useful for one decision: whether the same household budget stretches further here than where you live now. It cannot price a specific apartment or house. It also moves: the same Macon series read 90.2 for all items and 64.0 for rents in 2023, then 88.5 and 58.9 in 2024. And it covers the whole metropolitan statistical area, not Macon-Bibb alone. To price housing, compare current listings for the neighborhoods you are considering, and use the index only as a check on whether those listings look like what you expected.
How a Move Within Georgia Is Priced
A move that starts and ends inside Georgia is regulated by the Georgia Department of Public Safety, and its moving guide for household goods moves explains how the bill is built. For moves of less than 50 miles, “charges are based on the number of workers and hours for the loading, moving and unloading.” For moves of more than 50 miles, “charges are based on the total shipment weight and distance of the move.” The rates come from the department’s Maximum Rate Tariff, and the guide adds: “Remember all rates are negotiable.”
Two charges on top of the base rate are also set by the department, according to its household goods FAQ. Movers may charge a one-hour truck charge at the standard labor rate, and, as of January 13, 2026, a fuel surcharge set at $1.51 per mile from origin to destination “on weight and distance moves only.” For example, imagine a weight-and-distance move of 80 miles: at $1.51 a mile, the fuel surcharge would be $120.80.
Packing containers and packing labor are priced in the tariff, and the guide says that fee is “all inclusive”: tape and packing paper cannot be added on top. Protection is the other line to settle: the basic option reimburses loss or damage at $0.60 per pound per article at no extra charge, while full-value protection costs more, so compare two estimates only at the same protection level.
A move from another state is an interstate move under federal rules instead. The Department of Public Safety says it has no authority over a move whose origin or destination is outside Georgia; those moves are regulated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, whose rules govern how an interstate estimate can change. How to compare movers is covered in choosing a moving company in Macon.
The One-Time Georgia Cost of Bringing a Car
Georgia’s one-time Title Ad Valorem Tax replaced sales tax and the annual tax on vehicles, and it is paid when ownership changes or when “a new resident registers the vehicle in Georgia for the first time”, as DeKalb County’s tax commissioner explains on its vehicle tax page. The Georgia Department of Revenue’s vehicle tax page sets the new-resident rate at 3%, under a law effective July 1, 2019, against the standard 7% rate, and lists exceptions; a vehicle that falls under one, or a vehicle owned by a business, can be taxed differently. For a car brought from another state at the new-resident rate, imagine the state values it at $20,000: at 3%, the tax would be $600. The department’s page for new residents adds a $20 annual registration fee and an $18 title fee. Because the title tax replaced the annual vehicle tax, later years bring the registration renewal rather than a yearly tax on a car titled this way.
Timing changes that cost. The Georgia Department of Revenue’s policy bulletin explains that “there is a 10 percent penalty assessed on the unpaid TAVT for any vehicle owner who is more than 30 days late in registering”, and that interest of 1 percent per month applies to the tax due once an owner is more than 60 days late. If you move to Macon from another Georgia county with a car already registered here, you do not pay this tax again for the move; you notify the Macon-Bibb tax office of the new address within 30 days, as its motor vehicles page explains.
Deposits Before the Lights Come On
A new account can require money up front. Georgia Power’s deposits page says new customers may be asked for a security deposit depending on their credit score, and that a residential deposit “can be up to two times the residence’s average monthly bill”. It adds: “If a deposit is required, it cannot be waived.” The Macon Water Authority lists “An application fee due at the time service is requested” on its account setup page, says a security deposit may be required, and adds that “An additional deposit, up to three times the average monthly bill for water and sewer services, could be required based on past payment history.” Whether those apply depends on which utilities serve the address, so collect the amounts from each provider when you schedule service.
Monthly Costs After You Arrive
Housing and utilities are the lines the worksheet prices from your own lease and bills. Transportation is the next decision. If you plan to ride the bus for some trips, the Macon-Bibb County Transit Authority’s fare table lists a single ride at $1.25 and a 31-day unlimited pass at $50, with reduced fares for riders 62 and older and for students. If you will drive, budget insurance at a Georgia address, which your insurer can quote before you move.
Taxes That Arrive Once a Year
Property tax in Macon-Bibb is set by a millage rate that the county adopts each year, and school taxes are a separate levy, a split that Georgia’s 2026 Macon-Bibb homestead act spells out when it limits its exemption to county taxes. For fiscal 2027, the county commission kept the rate at 9.575 mills, the same as the year before, in a vote on September 9, 2026, as The Macon Newsroom reported. Because that rate sits above the 8.762-mill rollback rate, the county had advertised it in a notice of property tax increase as “an increase of .813 mills”. That 9.575 is the county rate only; the Bibb County School District levies its own rate on top of it, so get both from the tax commissioner before you estimate a bill on a purchase. The county’s tax commissioner takes solid waste payments alongside property tax payments, according to its home page, so ask the office whether the address carries a solid waste charge and add it to the budget. Homeowners can lower the taxable value with a homestead exemption; the dates and the age-based exemptions on the November 2026 ballot are covered in the guide for movers 55 and older.
Georgia’s income tax is a flat rate written into state law, and a 2026 law lowered it. House Bill 463, in the text passed by both chambers, sets the rate at 4.99 percent for taxable years beginning on or after January 1, 2026, and provides for cuts of 0.125 percent a year beginning in 2027 until the rate reaches 3.99 percent, each subject to delays under the law’s own conditions. Ernst & Young’s June 2026 tax alert reports the change as law, retroactive to January 1, 2026.
Building the Budget in Order
Price the housing first: the up-front cash for a lease or a purchase, and the monthly payment with insurance. Next, get two or three written moving estimates at the same protection level, and add travel, lodging and any storage. Then add the Title Ad Valorem Tax and fees for each car, at 3% of its value if the new-resident rate applies, and put the registration date, 30 days after the move, on the calendar. Collect the utility deposits each provider quotes for the address. Finish with the monthly lines for utilities, transportation and food, and with the property tax and any solid waste charge if you are buying.
